Project Hail Mary

Author:

Andy Weir

Genre:

Science Fiction, Space, Fantasy

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission—and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish.

Except that right now, he doesn’t know that. He can’t even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it.

All he knows is that he’s been asleep for a very, very long time. And he’s just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, Ryland realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Hurtling through space on this tiny ship, it’s up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mystery—and conquer an extinction-level threat to our species.

And with the clock ticking down and the nearest human being light-years away, he’s got to do it all alone.

Or does he?

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Project Hail Mary was a sensational read!

Ryland Grace was a fantastic character. He was intelligent, and I enjoyed his sense of humor. It was interesting to see him adapt to something he didn’t remember about at first, and with two dead crewmates who were supposed to be helping him along the way. I loved how Ryland named the alien he met out in space, Rocky. Rocky was an amazing alien. He and Ryland worked so well together despite their different species and needs. Rocky’s species lifespan is quite impressive. I was surprised when I learned that Rocky spent around 40 years alone in space.

The flashbacks Ryland had gave insight into how he ended up on the Hail Mary ship. At first, I thought he had volunteered, but it turned out that he didn’t. Really, I feel like he should have expected to be chosen, considering how much work he has been doing with the project the entire time. He was the only one qualified within the limited time they had to choose a replacement. And since Stratt doesn’t take no for an answer, it meant there was no way she was going to accept his response. I was impressed with the work Ryland and Rocky managed to do together. The ending was amazing. I am glad Ryland didn’t end up dying like the mission planned.

Overall, it was an amazing book that is definitely worth the read. I highly recommend reading!
